Amongst programming languages, few have garnered as much attention as Java has. The 20 year old programming language has been declared dead a number of times with a lot of people believing that when Apple boycotted it, it was the final nail in the coffin. Oracle then acquired Java in 2010 from Sun Microsystems and invested heavily strengthening the language. Even though a lot of programmers feel Java will soon be a relic, experts in the industry think otherwise. Here are 4 reasons why the programming language will never die:

  1. Java is old and known for its stability: Because the language is 20 years old, it has gone through a number of changes and has become stable with every upgrade making it stronger with new features. And stability is one quality that is sought after in all software applications! Financial service applications where stability is of utmost importance has steadily used Java. The success of Java in the financial industry has led it to becoming the choice for many enterprises and consumers.
  2. Use of Java in Enterprises: As soon as Oracle took over the language, it released a new version in 2010. Since then Java has gone through a number of changes and has updated itself several times over. The latest version of Java 9 breaks up the functions into many bite size components that will make it faster and more accessible to users. The large amounts of investments in the language have gone a long way in ensuring that enterprises who rely on it continue to do so. Hadoop which is an open source software framework is also written entirely in Java and is used for distribution of massive data sets. Java is known to offer a good balance between runtime performance and developer productivity. Developers are able to benefit from type-safe, simple and powerful language with a wide variety of high quality libraries and the performance is good. Even companies like Square and Netflix make use of Java for most part of their coding. They have open source tools that are Java-based making it easy to upgrade, monitor and upgrade services.
  3. Scalable, compatible and reliable: The huge tech companies like Google, Kayak, Amazon and eBay use Java for backend processes especially when it comes to users communicating with the databases. It is used because it is a seasoned, tried and tested apart from being very comfortable to work with. Java is also highly scalable as it can handle almost 200m users at its backend.
  4. Java evolves: Even if certain aspects of Java are gradually being used lesser, the IT biggies still use it for its compatibility. TIOBE Programming Community Index that tracks the popularity of programming languages depending on the quantity of lines written, Java 8 and then Java 9 have been massive hits! The index now rates it the most popular programming language in the world, leading other programming languages by 4.5%. This rise in popularity is because of the recent updates in functionalities in the later versions. One can write Java programs in a concise and functional way now and the developers love it! Proof – there are 9 million Java developers in the world today!

As long as Oracle continues to focus on the strengths of the language and continues to invest in creating better versions, Java is here to stay and stay for a very long time to come. Java is also a foundational programming language on which other Tech skills can be built on. It is also one of the most demanded skills when it comes to developer jobs.
